Against All Enemies

J.D. Pendry

"I DO SOLEMNLY SWEAR (OR AFFIRM) THAT I WILL SUPPORT AND DEFEND THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES AGAINST ALL ENEMIES, FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC; THAT I WILL BEAR TRUE FAITH AND ALLEGIANCE TO THE SAME; AND THAT I WILL OBEY THE ORDERS OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES AND THE ORDERS OF THE OFFICERS APPOINTED OVER ME, ACCORDING TO REGULATIONS AND THE UNIFORM CODE OF MILITARY JUSTICE.  SO HELP ME GOD."

It looks as though the Left Coast Circuit Court decision to declare the Pledge of Allegiance unconstitutional stands for now.  If upheld by the Supreme Court, where it will surely end up for decision, what does it mean for our country.  Our national motto after all is “In God We Trust”.  Must we change that?  Will the oath of our fighting men and women, quoted above, become void?  Will the President no longer be able to end a speech with God Bless America?  A friend of mine once suggested that maybe we should change that phrase anyway.  America Bless God made much more sense to him.

Some may view this as a trivial topic, but I don’t.  It’s discussions such as this and their outcome that ultimately chooses the direction for our country.  The way I see this is simple.  Everyone has a God.  Yours may not be the same as mine, but you have one.  One of the accepted definitions of God is a person or thing of supreme value*. Your God is whatever fits that definition for you.  It may be a deity, it may be power, it may be money, it may be the ACLU or it may be you.  So whenever compelled to use the word, or not, know what it means for you. As our country stands on the brink of war, I believe that it’s quite important that we look at the direction in which some are trying to push it.

Some of the things I’ve recently observed concern me.  The college basketball player who turns her back on our flag during the playing of the Star Spangled Banner is one.  If she were a student at Baghdad U, she’d get to do that once, then they’d let her watch while they killed her family.  That’s what is so bothersome about this.  Are America’s college students so stupid as to think that a better place to live on the face of this planet actually exists?  Maybe she should go to the United Nations for counsel.  After all, they have Libya in charge of the Humans Rights Commission. With their help, maybe she can straighten us out.  I wonder how well she’d be able to play basketball if we put her in a burkha?  The bright side is that if we did and she turned her back, we probably wouldn’t know it.

I’m a terrorist or at the minimum I support terrorism.  Why you ask?  Well, I drive a Ford F-150 pick up truck with a hundred thousand miles on it.  According to some of our rich and elite, the gasoline I buy ultimately supports terror.  I suppose their many thousand square foot homes, multiple automobiles and trips in private airplanes don’t consume anywhere near the amount of fuel as does my F-150.  Will you all please accept my apologies for my contribution to terror?  And, can we discuss how much of my precious oxygen these people are wasting?

The Hollywoodians are out and about.  They insist that they’re anti-war, but if you listen to them it becomes clear that they are really just anti President Bush.  The lack of respect shown by them for the leader of our nation, who is doing his level best to protect their privileged existence, simply amazes me.  How many of them did you see out yakking it up when President Clinton was diddling Monica while bombing the Balkans?  How many of them spoke out about the poor Iraqi people when President Clinton ordered the launch of 400 plus cruise missiles into Baghdad in 1998?  The difference is, Mr. Clinton is their kind of guy.  He has their kind of morals and answers to the same God as do they.  Which is self.

This one really made my blood boil.  It turns out some school teachers in Maine don’t care for the war.  So much so that they told some elementary school students, some of which had National Guard parents deployed to the Middle East, that going to war with Iraq is immoral and unethical as is anyone who participates in it.

“Members of the Maine National Guard, called up to prepare for an attack on Iraq, have asserted that their children are being harassed at school by teachers who oppose the war.”**

I spent some time in a public school.  One may find a conservative point of view if he can talk with the football coach, but beyond that it’s quite iffy.  It concerns me that any teacher would go beyond sharing facts and impress their own personal views on school children.  Especially when they share them with an elementary school child who may never see a deployed mother or father again.  That’s cruel.  That’s outright abuse.  Teachers doing it are a disgrace and need firing.  No more discussion required.

Why do we still refer to the French as allies?  For that matter, most of Europe with the exception of Prime Minister Tony Blair?  I wonder if there would have been so many anti-war protestors if September 11 happened in Bonn, Paris, Sidney, London…  Maybe I’m just overreacting.  America is about removing the threat not ignoring it.  I’m just grateful that we have a leader strong enough to carry us through it.

The men and women who take the oath to defend our country do it willingly.  They do not pick the enemy.  Throughout our history, the enemy has usually picked them.  All of us need to get on our knees and give thanks that there are still people in our country who willingly take the fight to our enemies on our behalf.  Soon, they will visit violence upon a group who would destroy America in an instant given the wherewithal and opportunity.  All of us may have our say, but when the time comes, our duty as Americans is to give our total support to the men and women who would sacrifice for our right to have and share that opinion.  May God be with them!
